LIV Emerging Lawyers

LIV Emerging Lawyers is the Law Institute of Victoria's community for law students and early-career lawyers in Victoria. It sits within LIV membership and focuses on legal skills, professional knowledge and networks in the first years of a career. Its work runs through committees, including the Emerging Lawyers Committee, a Professional Development Committee and a Community Issues Committee. The Community Issues Committee produces Diverse Voices in the Law, a collection of personal stories from students and lawyers from diverse backgrounds. The group runs the annual Victorian Golden Gavel, a public speaking competition for young lawyers held before a live audience. An Emerging Lawyers library holds blogs and articles written by members. Undergraduate law students can join the LIV with free student membership. Graduate membership covers law graduates completing practical legal training who do not yet hold a practising certificate.

Law Institute of Victoria (LIV)

The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) is the professional association for Victorian lawyers, based at 140 William Street, Melbourne. The Victorian Legal Services Board delegates some regulatory functions to it. It runs CPD seminars, CPD on Demand and networking events. Its library offers on-site and online research resources, legal research training and a legal archive service. Members can use the Ethics Support Line, practice support resources and a wellbeing hub. Its Find Your Lawyer Referral Service connects the public with member firms. Student membership is free for undergraduate law students. Graduate membership covers law graduates completing practical legal training or supervised legal training who do not yet hold a practising certificate. LIV Emerging Lawyers is its community for law students and early career lawyers. It publishes the Law Institute Journal and runs a section committee network.

Asian Australian Lawyers Association

The Asian Australian Lawyers Association is a volunteer-run not-for-profit for lawyers of Asian heritage and others interested in Asia. It was launched in October 2013 at the Victorian Supreme Court Library. It has a national executive and branches in New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, the ACT, South Australia and Tasmania. Student membership costs $20 a year and covers LLB, JD and PLT students. Practitioner fees range from $50 to $120 by years since admission. Members receive CPD and networking events, a members' directory and an online forum. Its annual National Mentoring Program runs for six months from August. Penultimate and final-year students, graduates and PLT trainees who are members can apply as mentees. It also offers the William Ah Ket Scholarship for junior lawyers and final-year students, and holds a National Cultural Diversity Summit.

Australian Law Students' Association

The Australian Law Students' Association is the national not-for-profit peak representative body for law students. Its members are law student societies, not individual students. Forty-two societies are listed as member associations, and each can appoint two representatives to its Council. Founded in the early 1970s, it was incorporated in 1986. It runs national competitions in mooting, negotiation, witness examination, client interviewing, mediation and paper presentation. Students are nominated by their law school, and finals are held at the annual national conference. The 2026 conference was hosted by Adelaide University and Flinders University on Kaurna Country. It also runs advocacy, peer assisted learning, publications and a Women's Advocacy Mentoring Group for female and gender-diverse law students. Individual students take part through their own law student society.
