ALRC tables Mabo report
Eighty-six recommendations for the most significant overhaul of the native title future acts regime in almost fifty years were tabled in Parliament on 24 June. The ALRC's assessment of the existing framework is not diplomatic.

The ALRC tabled its Final Report of the Review of the Future Acts Regime on 24 June — nine days ago, and worth noting regardless. Titled Fulfilling the Promise of Mabo: Reforming the Future Acts Regime in the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the report contains 86 recommendations and constitutes the first comprehensive review of the regime in almost fifty years. The ALRC's findings were direct: the current framework "generally does not provide adequate procedural or substantive rights or protections" and has "significantly failed" native title holders. The centrepiece recommendation is an impact-based process that calibrates procedural protections according to the nature and scale of each proposed future act — a significant structural change if implemented. A government response timeline has not yet been announced.
