LawUno opens nominations for the Australian Young Lawyer and Law Student Awards

Nominations are open for the Australian Young Lawyer & Law Student Awards 2026, presented by LawUno. The gala is at Sofitel Sydney Wentworth on 2 October 2026 from 6.30pm AEST. The College of Law Australia is principal partner and LawY is premium event partner.

The program is explicit that it is not measuring academic results. The stated criteria are initiative, resilience, community contribution and the effort involved in building a career in a competitive profession — the law students, graduates and junior lawyers who are building networks from nothing, seeking mentorship that was never offered, and creating opportunities where none existed.

Why a student and junior award matters more than it sounds

Recognition in law is heavily back-loaded. The profession is generous with acknowledgement once a career is established and largely silent during the years when acknowledgement would change a trajectory. A student who cannot secure a clerkship at a firm on the recruitment circuit has almost no mechanism for becoming visible to the profession at all.

An award aimed squarely at that cohort is a bridge rather than as a trophy. LawUno frames it that way, describing the program as being about access to opportunities rather than recognition alone.

Supervising solicitors and clerkship coordinators are the natural nominators here. The candidates most deserving of this are, almost by definition, the ones who do not know the awards exist.

A note on timing. Nomination windows for student and early-career programs close earlier than people expect, and the candidates worth nominating are usually mid-semester, mid-clerkship or mid-rotation and in no position to chase you. Do it this week rather than in the week before the deadline, when the person you are nominating will be asked for supporting material they will not have time to prepare.
