Court Network

Court Network is a non-government service that trains volunteers to help people understand and navigate the courts. Volunteers, called Networkers, give non-legal information, support and referrals. They do not give legal advice. The service runs in 34 courts across Victoria and Queensland. These include Victorian metropolitan and regional courts, VCAT, the Supreme Court and the Federal Circuit and Family Court at Melbourne and Dandenong. In Queensland it staffs domestic and family violence reception desks at five Magistrates' Courts. A free telephone support line runs on weekday afternoons, and court users aged 18 and over can pre-book support. Court Network began at Prahran Magistrates' Court in 1980 and has more than 300 volunteers. Volunteer training combines e-learning with on-the-job learning. Volunteers must commit to a regular roster for at least 12 months after training. Recruitment follows court vacancies, so some services only take expressions of interest at set times.
