Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service

The Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation with its head office in Preston and seven sites across Victoria. It gives culturally safe legal and community justice services to Aboriginal people of all ages and genders. Its legal practice covers criminal law, family law, family violence, and civil and human rights. Balit Ngulu is its youth practice, and Wirraway supports people harmed by police or prison authorities. Community justice programs include the Custody Notification Service, Aboriginal Community Justice Reports, Baggarrook transitional housing for women and the Ngang Gak family service. VALS also runs policy advocacy and community legal education. It hosts more than 60 volunteers each year across legal, policy, administration, fundraising and events roles. Legal volunteer roles suit people studying or holding a law degree or PLT. Volunteers lodge an expression of interest and are contacted when a role opens.
